The sports world is in mourning following the loss of Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona earlier this week. He passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack in his home of Buenos Aires.

Considered one of the best soccer players of all time, Maradona rose to the peak of his fame in the mid-1980s, spending time with Barcelona, Boca Juniors and Napoli.

Maradona is perhaps most famous for his performance in the 1986 World Cup, when he scored the “Hand of God” goal to lead Argentina over England in the quarter-finals. Maradona scored two more goals against Belgium in the semifinals and was credited with the game-winning assist against West Germany in the finals.

He was the recipient of the Golden Ball trophy, which is given to the best player in the tournament. There are many soccer fans in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, and among them is Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, who paid tribute to Maradona on Twitter:

Adios Diego, adios genio del Futbol! Mi sentido pésame a su amada Argentina, a sus deudos y al fútbol en todas las latitudes y dimensiones.

— Jaime Jarrín (@JaimeJarrin) November 26, 2020

The loss of Maradona will be felt by soccer fans everywhere. Jarrín, a lifelong fan of the sport, visited with LAFC defender Diego Palacios last year and proclaimed an affinity for the soccer club.

Beyond Jarrín identifying with Palacios, the Dodgers have additional ties to LAFC by way of Nomar Garciaparra, Peter Guber, Magic Johnson, Tucker Kain, Lon Rosen and Jason Sugarman being members of the ownership group.

Jarrín promotes safety for holiday season

As families grapple with trying times for Thanksgiving and the holiday season, Jarrín has partnered with L.A. Public Health to promote safety and being responsible.

The city and L.A. county as a whole have experienced a recent surge in positive cases, which led to the Board of Supervisors halting outdoor dining at restaurants.

Jarrín is the latest from the Dodgers organization to promote acting responsibly. Mookie Betts released a video earlier this year that promoted mask wearing, and Justin Turner spearheaded the team implementing protocols to layer on top of what MLB had set forth.
