Typically when a team wins the World Series, they are able to celebrate the long journey it took to get to that point in grand fashion, spraying champagne and beer on each other in the clubhouse.
Unfortunately for the Los Angeles Dodgers, they did not get that luxury after winning it all in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Major League Baseball made it clear from the regular season on that champagne celebrations would not be allowed, although never gave a true reason why.
Max Muncy is still wondering why they weren’t allowed to, although he said in an interview with David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports that he and the Dodgers plan to do something to celebrate in the near future:
“That’s something you’ll have to ask them. They refused to let us do it, and we were all pretty upset about that. We’ve all decided that at some point this year, when everything calms down, we’re going to get together and have a little celebration. I can promise you when that happens it’s going to be wild.”
Part of the reason the Dodgers weren’t able to really able to celebrate after winning the World Series was because of Justin Turner’s positive coronavirus test, which came to light immediately after the game ended. Turner had been removed seventh inning without any explanation.
However, the no champagne rule was in place before that and Turner had already been in contact with all of his teammates throughout the game, so Muncy raises a valid question that MLB never really bothered to answer.
Turner apologizes for actions, won’t be suspended by MLB
Even after Turner tested positive, he still came back onto the field after everything was over to take pictures with his wife Kourtney and teammates.
That forced MLB to investigate the situation, although they determined Turner will not be suspended after he issued a lengthy apology.
It is not believed additional players or family members tested positive because of Turner’s actions. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was among those to come to his defense, and so too did Clayton Kershaw, who additionally voiced disappointment Turner couldn’t be with the team under normal circumstances.
