The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Zach McKinstry and placed Joc Pederson on the family medical emergency list prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres. Caleb Ferguson was also put on the 10-day injured list and Josh Sborz was recalled.
McKinstry, who impressed during Spring Training and Summer Camp, joins the Dodgers for a second time this season. Though, his first stay was all of one day as McKinstry was among two players optioned so the Dodgers could pare their active roster to 28.
Between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City last season, McKinstry played six different positions while batting .300 with 24 doubles, 19 homers and 78 RBI. He was selected to the Texas League All-Star Game, and finished the season with Oklahoma City, batting .382 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 26 games.
Pederson is inactive for a second time in the past week-plus. He previously was placed on the paternity and missed four games. Pederson wasn’t with the Dodgers for a series finale against the Colorado Rockies, though remained on the active roster.
The Dodgers made a move prior to beginning a road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, then reinstated him ahead of welcoming the Houston Astros to Dodger Stadium for a two-game set.
Pederson has largely struggled to get on track this season. He’s batting .174/.268/.376 with four doubles, six home runs and 12 RBI in 38 games.
Pederson set career highs in batting average (.249), runs (83), hits (112), home runs (36), RBI (74) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.876).
The minimum amount of time on the family medical emergency list is three days.
Sborz returns, Joe Kelly active
As for Ferguson, he underwent an MRI on his left elbow to determine the extent of his injury. Ferguson faced one batter Tuesday night prior to being removed. An X-ray and ultrasound at Petco Park was inconclusive, prompting further examinations.
Sborz returns one day after he was optioned as the corresponding move to reinstating Justin Turner. Sborz is back with the Dodgers for a fourth time this season. He’s allowed one earned run in three innings over three appearances thus far.
After serving a five-game suspension, Joe Kelly is available to pitch.
