Once all the dust settled, the Los Angeles Dodgers made six selections in the 2020 MLB Draft and used four of them on pitchers; each of whom is right-handed.
“We’re fired up. We just got a lot of velocity, a lot of pure stuff. It’s big, it’s right handed. It was a strength of the Draft, and we just took advantage of it,” Dodgers vice president of amateur scouting director Billy Gasparino said.
The Dodgers’ 2020 MLB Draft picks, along with the ongoing dispute between the league and Players Association, were the topics of discussion on the latest “DodgerHeads” episode. Host Jeff Spiegel was again joined by Justin Lorber (@FutureDodgers) to discuss the organization’s draft haul.
Lorber explained why the Dodgers fared better than he anticipated, and noted how all of their draft picks come with an upside play. Gasparino himself noted some of the pitchers made serious strides — albeit in a small sample size — before the 2020 season was shut down because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Spiegel also touched on the latest developments between MLB and the MLBPA. Commissioner Rob Manfred reversed course from his unwavering confidence last week to now say he isn’t certain if a 2020 season will be played.
Like most others have, Spiegel explained why the majority of the blame lies with Manfred and the owners. Time remains of the essence, but as each day passes, the viability of a substantial season goes with it.
Lastly, “DodgerHeads” concluded with Spiegel sharing some thoughts on the recent ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, “Long Gone Summer,” that highlighted the home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa during the 1998 season.
