With no sporting events scheduled to take place anytime soon due to concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, sports networks and social media accounts have taken a creative approach toward keeping fans entertained during the downtime.
Over the past few weeks, ESPN, MLB Network and SportsNet LA have resorted to re-airing classic games to give fans their fix of sports. Many of the contests televised thus far have involved the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Clayton Kershaw’s first start in the big leagues.
There has also been an increase in social media usage among players, fans and companies. Gavin Lux is representing the Dodgers in an “MLB The Show” Players League tournament on Twitch, while Twitter has served as a platform for other competitions.
MLB Network Radio has conducted a “Best Hair in Baseball” tournament to determine which player has the best flow. The fans have spoken, as Dustin May and Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson will go head-to-head in the final round to crown a winner.
May is pleased to have advanced as far as he has and hopes Dodgers fans propel him to a victory, via SportsNet LA:
“It’s pretty cool. It would be an awesome thing. It’s cool. Everybody go vote, show some support and be a big Dodger fan and get me the ‘W.’ … It’s one of those stepping stones and things you can put under your belt and know that you have it. Just having that ability to know you won something — I’m a very competitive person — so I don’t want to lose. That’s kind of my thought process.”
As he stated, May is known to be ultracompetitive on the mound, and it appears that competitive nature also includes hair competitions as well. To reach the final round, May had to knock off the likes of Aaron Nola, Robert Gsellman, Kershaw and Max Fried in earlier matchups.
Fans can cast their vote between May and Swanson on Twitter until Friday at 11 a.m. PT.
