The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers share a storied rivalry that dates back to the franchises’ time in New York and Brooklyn, respectively, and several of their classic matchups on the West Coast are being highlighted by SportsNet LA throughout the weekend.
Their “Timeless Dodgers” programming begins at 6 a.m. Saturday morning, with a replay of the no-hitter Jerry Reuss threw on June 27, 1980. It held as the only no-hitter of his career and the first in the Majors during the 1980 season.
Prior to Reuss, the last no-hitter at Candlestick was Aug. 24, 1975, when the Giants’ Ed Halicki accomplished the feat in a 6-0 victory over the New York Mets.
If not for Bill Russell’s throwing error at shortstop in the first inning, Reus would have tossed a perfect game. The night nevertheless was historic for the embattled southpaw.
He largely limited the Giants to soft contact and despite only collecting two strikeouts, didn’t have many near-hits; only six balls went beyond the infield. In the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Terry Whitfield hit a line drive that landed just foul down the left-field line.
Ron Cey made a diving stop and throw for the first out in the eighth inning, preserving Reuss’ bid for history. Reuss finished the season with an 18-6 record and 2.51 ERA. He had 10 complete games, six shutouts, earned the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award and placed second in Cy Young voting. Reuss also was selected to his second and final All-Star Game.
Additional “Timeless Dodgers” broadcasts feature Orlando Hudson hitting for the cycle on Opening Day in 2009, Clayton Kershaw reaching 20 career wins for the first time, and multiple instances in which the Dodgers clinched the National League West against the Giants.
Spectrum Networks reached an agreement with AT&T this week to bring SportsNet LA to DirecTV, AT&T TV, U-verse TV and AT&T TV NOW customers in Southern California, Las Vegas and Hawaii.
