What was thought to be one of the greatest World Series matchups in MLB history has instead become marred by controversy as the Houston Astros are under investigation amid allegations they cheated throughout the 2017 season by electronically stealing signs at Minute Maid Park.
The Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games to win their first World Series title in franchise history; two of their victories — including a decisive Game 7 — came at Dodger Stadium.
Nevertheless, it’s easy for the Dodgers to feel jaded. While acknowledging there is no undoing the result, Joc Pederson admitted the allegations made it all the more difficult. Clayton Kershaw similarly voiced his disappointment with the development.
The Astros’ potential improprieties was a topic of discussion during the Winter Meetings, though several personnel members were hesitant to comment because of the ongoing investigation.
“Just waiting to see how it all kind of plays out. I really have no comment, just let the due process take care of itself,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And whatever consequences or whatever that comes down, they’re going to have to deal with it. I really don’t have any thoughts on what happened.”
Roberts’ body language suggested he had plenty on his mind, and when prodded further, some of those thoughts were shared. “I think the extent of some of the allegations — because right now I guess they’re allegations — probably surprised,” he added.
“If, again, they were using (cameras), the line was crossed, but on the field, as we all know, that’s a part of the game. Sign stealing, reading catchers and tipping — that’s all part of the game. But there is a line.”
Roberts agreed Houston’s alleged actions “absolutely” threatened the integrity of the game and conceded he “possibly” reflects on specific moments and the World Series as a whole. Beyond the Dodgers being victimized, the matter strikes a personal chord for Roberts because of his friendship with Astros manager AJ Hinch.
The two are close enough that Roberts hosted Hinch at his San Diego home during that offseason. The topic of cheating has since been discussed. “I’ve had a conversation with AJ,” Roberts said, then declining to provide any specifics.
“He’s still one of my good friends.”
