Hyun-Jin Ryu electrified Dodger Stadium with his first career home run and Cody Bellinger’s grand slam lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-4 victory against the Colorado Rockies. With that, the 2019 Dodgers became the eighth team in franchise history to reach 100 wins.
Garrett Hampson continued to be a thorn in L.A.’s side as his solo home run provided the Rockies with a lead in the first inning. Ryu largely settled in from there, retiring 13 of the next 15 batters faced to keep the Dodgers’ deficit at a minimum.
After watching their offense squander opportunities, Ryu went to right-center field for a game-tying home run in the fifth inning. That led to Antonio Senzatela’s unraveling, as he issued a walk and allowed consecutive singles to load the bases.
Jake McGee entered to face Bellinger, only for the lefty-on-lefty matchup to result in Bellinger’s fifth career grand slam (second this season). The home run was Bellinger’s 46th of the season and inched him ever closer to breaking Shawn Green’s franchise record of 49.
The Rockies cut into their deficit behind Sam Hilliard’s two-run home run in the seventh inning. It put a bit of a damper on what otherwise was another encouraging start for Ryu. After failing to complete six innings in four consecutive starts, he’s rebounded with seven frames in back-to-back outings.
Corey Seager provided the Dodgers with some breathing room by lifting a solo home run to right-center field in the seventh inning, and Smith followed suit in the eighth.
Seager had previously lined a single into center field to extend his hitting streak to nine eight games; producing seven multi-hit efforts during that span. A.J. Pollock’s double in the second inning gave him a season-best nine-game hitting streak.
Meanwhile, Turner went 1-for-3 in his second start since returning from a sprained left ankle. He was removed in favor of a pinch-runner in the fifth inning.
Max Muncy missed a second consecutive game because of quad tightness. He’s in line to have received at least three full days off before potentially being back in the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener at Petco Park.
With the Atlanta Braves’ loss on Sunday, the Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the top seed in the National League playoffs has been lowered to one.
