A rain delay spanning 2 hours and 37 minutes interrupted play in the third inning, and once it resumed the Los Angeles Dodgers added to their lead en route to a 7-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
The inclement weather cut the starts for Kenta Maeda and Nick Pivetta to two and 2.1 innings, respectively. Pivetta exited with a deficit that stemmed from losing command in the first inning.
After starting the game with a strikeout, he walked the bases loaded. A.J. Pollock’s sacrifice fly gave the Dodgers a lead, but Pivetta managed to limit the damage to just the one run.
Maeda was replaced by Casey Sadler, who retired two of three batters faced. The right-hander was then followed by Julio Urias. He initially was identified as a potential candidate to close because Kenley Jansen was unavailable, but instead wound up providing needed length.
Urias also extended the Dodgers’ lead to 2-0 with an RBI single in the sixth inning. L.A. had a combined no-hitter in the works until Scott Kingery blooped a single into shallow center field and out of Kiké Hernandez’s reach.
An intentional walk loaded the bases and created a force out everywhere but that proved costly as Urias had borderline pitches go against him, resulting in a walk that drove in the Phillies’ first run.
Pedro Baez inherited the jam and allowed a run on a fielder’s choice, tying the game, before getting the Dodgers out of the inning. Philadelphia didn’t collect another hit until Adam Haseley’s line drive got by a diving Max Muncy with one out in the ninth inning.
With the game tied, L.A. flashed their trademark power, beginning with David Freese lifting an opposite-field, two-run home run off Juan Nicasio in the seventh inning. Justin Turner delivered a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 6-2.
