Kyle Hurt & Wyatt Mills Recalled, Will Klein Placed On Injured List & Cole Irvin Designated For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Kyle Hurt and Wyatt Mills from Triple-A Oklahoma City, designated Cole Irvin for assignment and placed Will Klein on the injured list with right elbow disconfort prior to Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

Irvin is now off the roster, one day after he was added to the Dodgers roster. He took the place of Brock Stewart, who landed on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder discomfort. It represented Irvin’s first time back at the Major League level since the 2024 season.

He signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers back in February and had recently been activated off the Development List. Irvin’s time with the Dodgers was not only brief, but a bumpy one.

He took the brunt of a bullpen game that turned into a bit of a lopsided affair. Irvin allowed six runs but pitched six innings to take a burden off the Dodgers’ pitching staff.

“You have to sometimes take it on the chin to then give yourself a chance to win the series, and that’s kind of what you have to do,” manager Dave Roberts explained after the 9-4 loss. “It never feels good when you’re in it, but that’s what you have to do.”

The approach and outcome were similar to when Charlie Barnes pitched seven innings in a bullpen game and allowed seven runs in a loss to the Athletics.

Klein was a major part of the Dodgers’ bullpen early in the season, but he has struggled mightily as of late. He has allowed a run in six consecutive outings and an earned run in five consecutive, and allowed at least one run in eight of his last 11 appearances.

That stretch has brought his ERA from 2.12 on June 16 up to 3.67 now. His last scoreless outing came on July 4 against the San Diego Padres.

Kyle Hurt and Wyatt Mills join Dodgers roster

Hurt returns to the Dodgers roster for the first time since July 19 when he was added as the 27th player for a doubleheader against the New York Yankees.

The right-hander has had mixed results with the club this year, starting out excellent but then falling off and struggling.

In April, Hurt posted a 1.50 ERA and followed that up with an even better May when he pitched to a 0.75 ERA. But in June, Hurt’s ERA was 8.38, and that number rose to 9.53 in July.

“I’m kind of doing the hard part, getting 0-2, 1-2 on guys, and just not executing and getting pitches where I need to get them,” Hurt said about his struggles. “I’m just kind of leaving things over the plate, getting into deep counts. Those deep counts can lead to walks, and I just got to be better at finishing guys. Just put them away when I’m ahead. So that’s that’s about it.”

Overall, the right-hander has a 4.59 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched with a 3.64 FIP, 1.38 WHIP, 27.3% strikeout rate and 112.6% walk rate.

Mills has made five appearances this season for the Dodgers, and now returns for another stint with the club.

The right-hander has thrown 4.1 innings with a 6.23 ERA and a 2.31 WHIP with four strikeouts. With the OKC Comets, Mills has pitched well, holding a 2.41 ERA in 37.1 innings.

His last appearance with the Dodgers came on June 30 against the Athletics when he struck out the side to secure a 9-3 win.
