The Detroit Tigers are trading Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN:

The Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers were among the teams with varying levels of reported interest in the reigning two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, but Andrew Friedman appears to have gotten the deal to the finish line.
The Skubal trade ends multiple years of speculation regarding his future and signals the Tigers entering somewhat of a reset. There was some belief the left-handed ace would be moved at the 2025 trade deadline, but a high asking price was seemingly never met.
Though, there was skepticism over how motivated the Tigers were to trade Skubal at the time. Some of that sentiment resurfaced this year and was especially true this month as Detroit put together a strong stretch of play since the start of June.
It vaulted them back into the postseason picture, albeit as a Wild Card team, which is short of expectations going into the 2026 season.
Now, Skubal will join a vaunted Dodgers rotation with an opportunity to win a World Series before entering free agency this offseason. Considering he is in the final year of his contract, the Dodgers did not have to give up a king’s ransom to acquire the ace, although Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith are all highly-regarded in their farm system.
Given the depth the Dodgers do have in their system, they were one of the only teams in baseball capable of making this deal. Skubal will now headline a postseason rotation that could also feature Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani depending on who is healthy.
Tarik Skubal’s outlook
Skubal now is part of a more form playoff trajectory with the Dodgers. He’s getting further removed from a left elbow surgery to remove loose bodies that was completed with the innovative NanoNeedle technology.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache using the NanoScope 2.0 allowed for Skubal to return a mere five weeks after his surgery. That set a lofty expectation for Blake Snell, but his operation entailed the removal of more loose bodies and other circumstances that are requiring a lengthier recovery period.
Skubal allowed multiple runs in each of his first three starts upon returning, but then found a rhythm and pitched particularly well throughout the month of July.
Although he’s poised to provide a boost in the immediate future, there is looming uncertainty with Skubal on track to become a free agent after the 2026 season.
