Dodgers Recall Paul Gervase, Charlie Barnes Optioned

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Charlie Barnes to Triple-A Oklahoma City and recalled Paul Gervase to their active roster ahead of Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Barnes was recalled on Wednesday to cover the bulk of the series finale against the Athletics. Shohei Ohtani was originally scheduled to start, but the Dodgers pushed him back in favor of the bullpen game.

Barnes’ second stint with the Dodgers wound up being extremely brief but valuable for the team. He pitched seven innings while allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Barnes followed Jack Dreyer, who was the only other Dodgers pitcher to appear in the loss.

Barnes was able to get the Dodgers through their punt game without using any other relievers to reset their pitching staff as they begin a seven-game homestand on Thursday.

“You know what, unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of practice,” Roberts said about telling Barnes he would be optioned after picking up the team. “It’s not a good conversation, but a lot of these guys understand they’re stopgaps right now and it’s part of having options. You can kind of go up and down, and fill holes when needed.

“I think for him, it’s the longest he’s gone; certainly in the big leagues. So that’s a learning experience and an opportunity that he earned, we gave him. So that’s a positive. But yeah, we’ve still got to be able to cover our downside, add arms and things like that.”

The Dodgers acquired Barnes on May 9 by claiming him off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. He has gone 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in six appearances for the Comets.

The southpaw has now thrown 12 innings across four MLB games this season, posting a 7.50 ERA and 1.92 WHIP with four strikeouts.

Paul Gervase returns to Dodgers

Gervase is now back for his third stint this season with the Dodgers. His stay figures to be another short one with Evan Phillips set to return by July 4.

Gervase has made two appearances for the Dodgers this season, throwing five innings with five strikeouts. That has resulted in a 1.80 ERA and 2.26 FIP with a 1.40 WHIP while he has struck out 23.8% of hitters and walked 9.5%.

The right-hander has appeared in eight Major League games in his career, posting a 3.38 ERA and 5.88 FIP with 13 strikeouts to eight walks in 13.1 innings, giving him a 1.58 WHIP.

With Oklahoma City, Gervase has pitched to a 3.60 ERA in 19 games while throwing 25 innings with 35 strikeouts and a 1.44 WHIP.

The Dodgers acquired Gervase last season, along with Ben Rortvedt and Adam Serwinowski, in a three-way trade with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds that sent Hunter Feduccia to Florida.
