Mookie Betts Expected To Make Quick Return From Right Wrist Soreness

The Los Angeles Dodgers finished their road trip without Mookie Betts, who was scratched from the lineup just under two hours before first pitch at Sutter Health Park.

Miguel Rojas started at shortstop in Betts’ place but there isn’t expected to be an issue moving forward.

What is Mookie Betts’ injury?

The Dodgers announced Betts missed the series finale against the Athletics due to right wrist soreness. It’s the second injury he’s dealt with this season, as the 33-year-old spent five weeks on the injured list with a right oblique strain.

The latest issue is much more mild and Betts should be back in the Dodgers lineup for the start of their series against the San Diego Padres.

“I think more just get ahead of it. Don’t have an incident on how it happened. He said with treatment he felt better and a lot of relief,” manager Dave Roberts said on SportsNet LA. “So our expectation is [Thursday], he’ll be back in there. … I found out about it around 1 o’clock this afternoon.

“He tried to go through treatment and see if we could get it moving to see if it would respond.”

Although the Dodgers are optimistic in Betts’ status moving forward, it would not be a surprise if he missed one more game because of some lingering soreness. The team routinely errs on the side of caution, and certainly will do so with Betts should it become necessary.

Betts endured a slow start to the season before starting to find his swing over recent weeks. He batted .290/.339/.477 with five doubles, five home runs and 12 RBI in 115 plate appearances over 26 games during the month of June.

Betts was particularly hot in his last 12 games, 19-for-51 (.373) with seven extra-base hits and 10 RBI. He had at least one hit in 11 of his final 12 games to close out the month. It included five multi-hit games and a trio of three-hit performances.

Betts likened the recent success to Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry catching fire after seeing the basketball go through the rim once.

From Roberts’ perspective, he felt Betts started to benefit from gaining confidence with each successful game that passed.
