Freddie Freeman Sees Mookie Betts ‘Trending Upward’

Mookie Betts continued to build on what’s been a productive month of June as he hit well in all three games against the San Diego Padres to help the Los Angeles Dodgers come away with a series win.

Betts homered on Friday and Saturday, extending his streak to three consecutive games with a long ball. That was snapped in the series finale, but Betts had a multi-hit effort and two RBI in the Dodgers’ 4-2 win.

Freddie Freeman careful not to ‘jinx’ Mookie Betts

While Betts has heated up over recent weeks, he’s passed on an opportunity to declare himself as being back offensively. That sentiment resonated with Freddie Freeman.

“It’s baseball. We can’t say that. It can go sideways real quick,” Freeman said on SportsNet LA.

“He’s swinging the bat really well. I’m not going to be the one to jinx it either. But he’s confident in himself, missiling balls into left-center. That last one, against Jason Adam, that’s a tough AB. And it’s a line drive into right field.”

Freeman concluded his praise with cautiously acknowledging Betts’ trajectory.

“We’re trending upward,” he said. “How about that?”

Now in the month of June, the four-time World Series champion is batting .278/.333/.474 with four doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI. There are two more games remaining until the calendar flips to July and Betts look to carry his success deeper into the summer.

Mookie replicates World Series play

Along with a third multi-hit performance in his last five games, Betts sealed the Dodgers’ win by fielding a grounder and stepping on second base before leaping into the air while throwing over to first base for a double play. It was reminiscent of how he finished the Dodgers’ Game 7 win in the 2025 World Series.

“That’s what Max (Muncy) and I said. We’ve seen that before,” answered Freeman when asked if the play felt familiar. “He’s been playing great defense since he took over at shortstop and he’s starting to hit now.

“Things are looking good for us.”

Although it was a dazzling play, Betts acknowledged to Kirsten Watson during his on-field interview that he likely should’ve flipped the ball over to Miguel Rojas at second base instead.
