Dodgers Top Prospect River Ryan Lands On Minor League Injured List Again

Los Angeles Dodgers’ top pitching prospect was once placed on the Minor League injured list with a hamstring issue.

This is the second time this season that Ryan has dealt with a hamstring injury and was sent to the IL. He missed about one month last time due to the injury, which the Dodgers said was not serious at the time.

Once again, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said the current injury isn’t any major concern, according to Fabian Ardaya and Katie Woo of The Athletic.. The good news is Ryan is able to continue throwing, so his arm shouldn’t be set back too much:

“The good thing is it’s not anything overly serious,” Gomes said Friday afternoon ahead of the Dodgers’ game against the San Diego Padres. “(Ryan) will be able to keep throwing, just not off the mound. Obviously, we’ll continue to look at what are the things we can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

The Dodgers also want to figure out why Ryan has suffered another hamstring issue to see if they can figure out how to prevent it:

Gomes added: “It’s frustrating for River and unfortunate that he’s not able to continue right now. Now we’re just looking towards figuring out how to handle this and put it behind him, so he can be an option for us in a few weeks moving forward.”

Ryan was first placed on the IL on April 17 before being activated on May 15. He pitched about five weeks before landing back on the IL on June 26.

Ryan has made eight starts this season for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets, two before his first IL stint and six after his activation. The right-hander has pitched to a 4.46 ERA in 36.1 innings in the extremely hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League while striking out 43 hitters and walking eight.

The right-hander was pitching to a 2.81 ERA before his previous outing on June 17, when he allowed eight runs over 4.1 innings and felt his hamstring issue start to flare up.

The 27-year-old missed the entire 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, but made his MLB debut in 2024, throwing 20.1 innings with a 1.33 ERA.

Dodgers were building up River Ryan before injury

Although Ryan was performing well at Triple-A, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman explained the team was focused on building his workload before he possibly becomes an option for their rotation.

The Dodgers also want to make sure he’s healthy in October so Ryan can contribute in October.
