Freeway Series Recap: Dodgers Beat Angels On Freddie Freeman’s Walk-Off Home Run

Offense was at a premium on Friday night and it only took the Los Angeles Dodgers one run to remain undefeated against the Los Angeles Angeles.

They did so behind a 1-0 win at Dodger Stadium thanks to Freddie Freeman’s walk-off home run against former teammate Kirby Yates. It was Freeman’s eighth walk-off home run of his career when including the regular season and playoffs.

The Dodgers have now won all four Freeway Series games in 2026 thus far.

Moreover, the Dodgers remain the only team that’s yet to play extra innings this season. They have three walk-off wins this year and eight shutouts.

Dodgers 1, Angels 0: key takeaways

Pitching duel

Roki Sasaki and Reid Detmers had dueling no-hitters entering the fourth inning. Detmers lost his on Freeman’s one-out single in the bottom of the fourth, and Sasaki allowed a double in the fifth inning.

Detmers wound up limiting the Dodgers to just two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings.

Roki Sasaki’s career high

Sasaki added onto an impressive stretch that began against the Angels on May 17 by firing seven shutout innings. He did so by setting a career high with 10 strikeouts.

Sasaki’s previous high was eight strikeouts, set in his first start against the Angels this season. Friday’s outing also tied the longest of Sasaki’s career, which initially came in Anaheim as well.

Over his last four starts, Sasaki has a 1.48 ERA with 29 strikeouts and five walks.

Part of Sasaki having a no-hitter was thanks in part to Miguel Rojas making a terrific one-handed play. He got to a comebacker that went off Sasaki’s glove and made an off-balance throw in time for the first out in the third inning, though the Dodgers did have to challenge the call.

Then with two outs and a runner on first base, Mookie Betts ranged to his left and made a glove toss to Rojas at second base to end the third inning.

In the sixth inning, Santiago Espinal made a diving stop at third base to keep the game scoreless. It marked a second consecutive inning Sasaki stranded a go-ahead runner in scoring position. The Dodgers had already planned to have Espinal start in place of Max Muncy on Friday night before his head-on collision with Ildemaro Vargas.

Muncy did pinch-hit to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning but struck out on three pitches.

Pride Night

Coinciding with the 13th annual Pride Night at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers unveiled a tribute to LGBTQ+ trailblazers Billy Bean and Glenn Burke, both of whom played for the team and were among the first professional athletes to identify as gay.

The permanent display is located in the center field plaza, and features pictures and memorabilia from their respective careers and text explaining the duo’s contributions to Major League Baseball and professional sports.
