Dave Roberts Defends Andy Pages Amid Brewers’ Claims Of Stealing Signs

Andy Pages has grown in several areas since making his MLB debut in 2024 and quickly become an All-Star caliber player for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

While Pages’ biggest developments have come as a center fielder and with hitting, another area he’s seemingly become adept in is picking up signs when on second base.

According to Rich Rovito of MLB.com, Brewers manager Pat Murphy believed that was a factor in the Dodgers’ comeback win on Saturday.

“There’s a huge emphasis on making sure they can’t get your signs from second base,” Murphy said. “Pitchers have to be able to not give away anything. It’s gotten to be a science. Every team does it. We do it. Some teams do it less subtle than others. He got caught up and gave away some pitches, and it ended up hurting him.”

Robert Gasser also said he noticed Pages appearing to relay either his pitches or location.

“I did look back once and saw [the runner on second] moving his hands” he said. “I haven’t looked in depth at it. I saw some of the photos, but it seemed like my hand was getting covered. Maybe they had something, maybe not.”

Pages went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one walk from the cleanup spot of the Dodgers lineup on Saturday. His extra-base hit put the Dodgers on the scoreboard in the fourth inning and he was still on second base when Teoscar Hernández hit a go-ahead, three-run homer.

The manner in which Pages seemingly goes about relaying pitches from second base is not against MLB rules, which was a point manager Dave Roberts noted. But he also downplayed the notion that the Dodgers had any info on Gasser.

“All teams do it. Whether you have them to disguise or act like you have them, the gamesmanship part of it,” he said on SportsNet LA. “If you can make a pitcher feel you’ve got their signs, then you’ve already won. And honestly right there, I don’t think we had the signs.

“I think Teo took a great swing and it wasn’t really a great pitch. But yeah, I’m honestly not certain.”

Pages previously was implicated in stealing signs from second base during the National League Division Series last year, which coincidentally came as Hernández hit a homer against the Philadelphia Phillies. Given some of the regularity Pages has been suspected, Roberts believes it’s something his young center fielder enjoys.

“Yes, I think he does. Yes,” Roberts said with a laugh. “I don’t mind it. I think it’s good that he’s engaged with things like that. There’s certain times, though, you want the runner to be more still, to not distract the hitter. Because you don’t want that either.

“But yeah, I like the way a young player is still engaged, trying to get a competitive advantage for the hitter.”
