Blake Snell Back On Dodgers’ Injured List, Charlie Barnes Recalled

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Charlie Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City and put Blake Snell back on the 15-day injured list before Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Snell’s stint is backdated to May 12.

Barnes is on the Dodgers roster just under one week after they claimed him off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Tommy Edman was transferred to the 60-day injured list at the time in order to make room for Barnes on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

The left-hander had been designated for assignment by the Cubs on May 6.

Barnes only appeared in one game for the Cubs this year, allow four runs (three earned) over three innings pitched back on April 13. He was optioned to Triple-A Iowa the following day, returned to the Cubs roster on April 26 but was sent back to the Minors one day later.

Barnes made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins during the 2021 season, going 0-3 with a 5.92 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in nine games (eight starts). Barnes was drafted by the Twins in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Over six Minor League seasons, the 30-year-old is 27-24 with a 3.86 ERA while primarily filling a starer role. Barnes went 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in seven games (four starts) for the Iowa Cubs this year.

Blake Snell back on injured list

Snell was scheduled to start in the Freeway Series opener but was scratched a handful of hours before first pitch. Will Klein is filling an opener role as part of a bullpen game.

Although Snell is back on the injured list for a second time this season, his latest trip is due to left elbow loose bodies. It’s not yet clear if he will require surgery like Edwin Díaz did. Snell did previously have such an operation in 2019, and he was out from late July into the middle of September.

Snell missed the first six weeks of the year due to left shoulder fatigue. That stemmed from shoulder inflammation Snell dealt with early last season and again in the playoffs.

His return lasted all of one start, which was an unexpected outing with L.A. Snell had been scheduled to make a fourth rehab start but instead was dropped into the Dodgers’ rotation, partly because of Tyler Glasnow going on the injured list.

Snell dealt with some rust against the Atlanta Braves but overall was encouraged by his health and looked forward to continue improving with each outing.
