Dodgers Part Of NL West Setting MLB Record With Losing Streaks

The Los Angeles Dodgers got back in the win column on Sunday morning to avoid being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals and end their four-game losing streak, but it wasn’t before they were part of MLB history.

Following play on Saturday night, the entirety of the National League West was on a losing streak of three or more games. The Dodgers and San Diego Padres had each lost four straight, while the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies lost three in a row. The last place San Francisco Giants were losers of five straight games.

That marked the first time in MLB history that an entire division was on a three-game or greater losing streak at the end of the same day, according to OptaSTATS.

Current streaks in the NL West:

Giants: lost 5
Dodgers: lost 4
Padres: lost 4
Diamondbacks: lost 3
Rockies: lost 3

This is the first time in MLB history every team in a division was on a 3+ game losing streak at the end of a given day.

In total, the NL West combined to lose 19 consecutive games together, until the Dodgers and Padres broke their losing streaks on Sunday. However, the Giants, Diamondbacks and Rockies all added one more game to their streaks with losses.

Despite their losing streaks, the Dodgers and Padres still sit in prime postseason positioning in the early parts of the season. The Dodgers lead the NL West and have the third-best record in the NL at 21-13, while the Padres sit atop the Wild Card standings at 20-13 with the fourth-best record in the league.

Meanwhile, only the New York Mets (12-22), who went on a 12-game losing streak earlier this season, have a worse record than the Giants (13-21) and Rockies (14-21). The D-Backs sit in the middle of the pack at 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with a 16-17 record.

Dodgers offense an issue during losing streak

Despite the Dodgers getting excellent pitching nearly every night, they went on a losing streak because their offense couldn’t score consistently during their recent stretch of poor play. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has called out the poor situational hitting, and his club has not hit a home run in six consecutive games.

That makes for a poor combination for offensive success, which is why they’ve had so little of it recently. Roberts has called on some of his players to have a better plan at the plate, while also noting that some hitters are just off mechanically.
