Tigers Claim Grant Holman Off Waivers From Dodgers

The Detroit Tigers claimed Grant Holman off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Trey Sweeney, who the Tigers acquired from the Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty trade in 2024, was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Holman on their 40-man roster.

With Flaherty again a member of the Tigers, he potentially will be teammates with Holman should he get added onto their roster at some point. The right-hander was optioned to the Tigers’ Florida Complex League affiliate.

Holman had yet to pitch for a Minor League team within the Dodgers organization after getting claimed off waivers at the beginning of the month. It had not been previously announced that Holman was designated for assignment by the Dodgers and passing through waivers.

Holma’s arrival coincided with Gavin Stone being transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Manager Dave Roberts indicated on Friday that Stone is not yet close to being an option for the rotation.

Grant Holman’s career

Holman joined the Dodgers organization exactly one week after getting DFA’d by the Arizona Diamondbacks. His involvement in their roster churning came just one month removed from the Diamondbacks claiming Holman off waivers from the Athletics.

Holman made his MLB debut with Oakland in 2024 and appeared in a career-high 22 games for them last season. Over parts of two seasons with the A’s, Holman went a combined 5-3 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 40 games (two starts).

Both of Holman’s starts came last year and were effectively as an opener in each instance. Holman’s first career start was 1.1 innings and he pitched just the opening frame in his second start.

The 25-year-old was drafted by the Athletics in the sixth round in 2021. Holman was a Pacific Coast League All-Star for the Las Vegas Aviators in 2024, when he posted a 0.92 ERA and collected 30 strikeouts over 29.1 innings.

What waiver claim means for Dodgers

Given that Holman still had two Minor League option years remaining, the Dodgers’ decision comes as somewhat of a surprise. Though, they are soon going to be in need of 40-man roster spots as Kiké Hernández, Brock Stewart and others are set to return.

The reality was Holman’s outlook with the Dodgers was as an organizational depth piece, and they still have other candidates to fill that role with the 25-year-old now a member of the Tigers.
