Recap: Bullpen Struggles In Loss That Snaps Dodgers’ 5-Game Winning Streak

The Los Angeles Dodgers again were tasked with needing to come from behind, and while they managed to take a lead, they ultimately suffered a 4-3 loss and fell short of sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays.

That snapped the Dodgers’ season-best winning streak at five games and helped the Blue Jays stop a downward spiral that had amounted to losing six in a row.

Thursday is an off day and the Dodgers then will begin a six-game homestand with series against the Texas Rangers and New York Mets.

Blue Jays 4, Dodgers 3: key takeaways

Shohei Ohtani’s streaks

Shohei Ohtani entered the finale of the Dodgers’ road trip with the longest active on-base streak and scoreless innings streak. He drew a leadoff walk in the first inning to reach safely in a 43rd consecutive game. That’s now tied with Ichiro Suzuki for the longest on-base streak in MLB history by a Japanese-born player.

But Ohtani saw his scoreless streak as a pitcher come to an end at 24.2 innings when he gave up a two-out RBI double to Jesús Sánchez in the third. That was the lone run, which was unearned, Ohtani allowed over six innings. He scattered four hits, walked one batter and struck out two.

It was the first time in Ohtani’s career he finished with two or fewer strikeouts when completing six innings.

Ohtani’s 96 pitches were the most he’s thrown for the Dodgers in a regular season. It’s topped only by the 100 pitches during his start in Game 4 of the 2025 National League Championship Series.

Miguel Rojas honors father

One day after being scratched from the lineup due to what the Dodgers announced was a family matter, Miguel Rojas returned on Wednesday with a heavy heart. Rojas revealed his father passed away unexpectedly but still chose to play in the series finale as a means of paying tribute to him.

Comeback kids come up short

The Dodgers didn’t have a hit against Dylan Cease until Will Smith’s infield single in the fourth inning. A throwing error moved him into scoring position, and Freddie Freeman immediately took advantage with a game-tying RBI single. That also extended Freeman’s hitting streak to eight games.

Teoscar Hernández’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, and Andy Pages extended it with an RBI single in the seventh.

However, Jack Dreyer allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Blue Jays took their decided lead in the eighth on a Smith throwing error to second base.

The Dodgers rarely thrown down to second when a runner is on third base, and the sequence served as another reminder of why that’s the case.

The Dodgers left the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning. They also finished without an extra-base hit in the game.
