Dave Roberts Gets ‘Nervous’ When Thinking About Dodgers’ Three-Peat

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the 2026 season with a chance to become the first team in more than a quarter-century to win three consecutive World Series titles.

While many around baseball have discussed the possibility, manager Dave Roberts said the mere thought makes him anxious, via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

“It’s hard to believe when you start thinking about that,” Roberts said. “When I start thinking about stuff like that, then I get nervous.”

Roberts’ nerves are justified as the Dodgers are flirting with a feat that has only been accomplished four other times in MLB history. The only franchises to win at least three World Series titles in a row are the New York Yankees (1936-1939, 1949-1953, 1998-2000) and Oakland Athletics (1972-1974).

The Dodgers have every reason to be excited about their chances after reinforcing what was already considered the deepest roster in baseball by signing top free agents Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz during the offseason.

If their season-opening sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks was any indication, the Dodgers could be in line for a historic year. The club won three consecutive games, powered by timely hitting and dominant pitching.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Emmet Sheehan and Tyler Glasnow combined to allow eight runs, while the bullpen collectively threw 11.2 scoreless innings. The offense also scored 16 runs despite a few key contributors struggling out of the gate.

Most impressive was the bottom of the Dodgers lineup leading the way, with Alex Freeland, Andy Pages and Miguel Rojas all finding success. Will Smith also had the game-winning home run on Saturday to help the Dodgers start the year with a perfect 3-0 record.

Dodgers want three-peat

When the Dodgers held their 2025 World Series parade last year, Roberts, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman all alluded to the possibility of a three-peat.

“I want to say I’m so proud of this team and you guys are the greatest fans in the world,” Ohtani said in English. “I’m ready to get another ring next year. Let’s go.”

The two-way star continued that message when he gifted his Dodgers teammates a high-end Seiko watch that included the tag “Happy Opening Day!! Three-Peat!!”

The Seiko watch gifted to the players featured a smoky blue dial with a silver bracelet and a chronograph.
