Dodgers Expect Blake Snell & Tommy Edman To Return In Late May

Blake Snell and Tommy Edman were among the Los Angeles Dodgers players limited in Spring Training due to injury, but both have made progress toward returning to the team.

Snell, who reported to camp behind schedule because of left shoulder inflammation, has since resumed throwing low-intensity bullpen sessions. As for Edman, he has been taking on-field batting practice, but is still a few weeks away from full baseball activities.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that he expects Snell and Edman to make their 2026 debuts at the end of May, via Dodger Insider:

Roberts said Tommy Edman and Blake Snell are progressing. End of May for Edman is when he should be an option, Roberts said. Snell around the same time.

Snell hoped to pitch in a game for the Dodgers by late April, but it looks like he will need at least one more month before that becomes a reality. He has nevertheless made strides in his recovery and recently threw his first bullpen session with the catcher squatting.

Snell will need to advance to throwing high-intensity bullpen sessions before facing hitters, then begin a Minor League rehab assignment before rejoining the Dodgers’ starting rotation.

Edman is still recovering from offseason right ankle surgery and has made it clear he does not want to force himself back into action until he has made enough progress. Edman was limited to primarily playing second base last year because of his ankle, but now wants to make sure he can play the outfield again as well.

Dodgers roster without Blake Snell & Tommy Edman

Snell and Edman both beginning the 2026 season on the injured list created some competition for the Dodgers in Spring Training.

Emmet Sheehan earned the final spot in the starting rotation over Justin Wrobleski and is scheduled to make his first start when the Dodgers play the second of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 27.

Wrobleski will begin the year in the bullpen, but figures to be the Dodgers’ sixth starter when they need one.

The Dodgers will also use a platoon at second base until Edman returns, which will see Alex Freeland share reps with Miguel Rojas. Freeland earned the final Opening Day roster spot over Hyeseong Kim, who was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City so he can get consistent playing time.
