Major League Baseball announced that Spring Breakout will be expanding to a tournament-style format in 2027.
The new single-elimination tournament will begin next year to avoid a conflict with the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Teams will be comprised of top prospects going head-to-head in this format for the first time, with both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues crowning a Spring Breakout champion.
“Spring Breakout has provided invaluable exposure to the future stars of our game and given our fans a preview of all the exciting talent that is flowing into our sport,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.
“With more meaningful games, the Spring Breakout Tournament will take this event to the next level and create a unique experience for our fans ahead of Opening Day.”
Spring Breakout has been a massive success since its introduction in 2024. This year’s edition will take place from March 19-22, with all games being carried live by MLB Network, local regional sports networks and the league’s digital properties.
Eleven of the 16 games will be played as a standalone game at a Major League Spring Training venue, while the remaining five contests will be played as a single-admission doubleheader with a MLB Spring Training game.
Many of the game’s future stars are expected to play in the 2026 Spring Breakout, including Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Konnor Griffin, Detroit Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle and outfielder Max Clark, Athletics infielder Leo De Vries, Milwaukee Brewers infielder Jesús Made and St. Louis Cardinals infielder J.J. Wetherholt.
Among the others who have participated in Spring Breakout include Paul Skenes, Nick Kurtz, Drake Baldwin, James Wood, Junior Caminero, Jacob Misiorowski, Jackson Chourio, Trey Yesavage, Roman Anthony, Jackson Holliday and Masyn Winn.
The 2026 Spring Breakout rosters will be revealed live on MLB Network on Thursday, March 5 at 9 a.m. PT.
