Dave Roberts: Jack Dreyer ‘Very Valuable’ Part Of Dodgers Bullpen

The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen that was assembled heading into the 2025 season figured to be led by the likes of Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates and Alex Vesia.

In reality, rookie Jack Dreyer has arguably been the best option for manger Dave Roberts.

The left-hander wasn’t a highly-touted prospect in the Dodgers’ farm system by sites like MLB Pipeline, not even cracking the team’s top-30 prospects.

For a bullpen that has been prone to late-inning collapses in 2025, Dreyer has been one of their most consistent and reliable arms.

Dreyer quickly made a positive impression on Roberts and the rest of his teammates early on this season. Roberts was impressed by the rookies’ ability to handle pressure on the mound and be a positive presence in the clubhouse.

That theme has been a through line this season, and Roberts continues to be impressed by Dreyer’s mound presence and baseball IQ.

“Jack’s been great,” Roberts said. “It’s hard to quantify baseball aptitude or heartbeat, but because of his intelligence, his calmness, he’s been able to handle whatever role, whatever leverage.

“He takes the information, understands what he’s trying to do every time he’s on the mound. And that’s shown itself. He’s unflappable. Very, very valuable for our ballclub and the ‘pen.”

In 60 games this season, Dreyer has a 2.69 ERA, 68 strikeouts, 10 holds and has converted three of four saves across 70.1 innings pitched.

Dreyer signed with the Dodgers as an undrafted free agent in 2021 after finishing his collegiate career at the University of Iowa. He missed the 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, which likely contributed to not getting drafted.

Dodgers assistant general manager and vice president of baseball operations Billy Gasparino revealed to DodgerBlue.com that Dreyer’s agent called the team and implored them to sign his client.

Dreyer rapidly rose through the ranks of the Dodgers farm system to find himself in the Majors in 2025. After recovering from Tommy John surgery, he made 12 appearances for the Arizona Complex League Dodgers in 2022. Dreyer followed that up in 2023 with 42 games pitched for High-A Great Lakes.

The left-hander was promoted to Double-A Tulsa for the beginning of the 2024 season and moved up to Triple-A Oklahoma City after dominating the competition to the tune of 14.2 scoreless innings.

After pitching in 46 games with a 2.20 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with the Drillers and Comets, the Dodgers had a high enough opinion of Dreyer to place him on the 40-man roster last year in order to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.

Jack Dreyer participates in Dodgers’ back-to-school resource fair

The Dodgers partnered with General Mills to host a Back-to-School Resource Fair at Dodger Stadium early last month for 500 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) students and their families.

The Dodgers also teamed up with the Los Angeles Lakers for the event, with both organizations sending players to participate. Dreyer, Alex Freeland, Luis Cruz, Dennis Powell and Ken Landreaux were among those on hand to help distribute items and interact with students.
