The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list with Grade 1 right oblique strain and added Buddy Kennedy to their active roster prior to Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Muncy’s latest injury comes as the Dodgers begin a stretch of playing six games against the Padres in 10 days. Muncy previously missed just under five weeks because of a bone bruise in his left knee.
While that was a prolonged recovery, he returned quicker than the Dodgers anticipated.
Muncy wound up playing in eight games (seven starts) before landing back on the injured list. Trouble arose on Wednesday night when he was scratched from the lineup due to what Dodgers manager Dave Roberts deemed soreness in Muncy’s right side.
Muncy was out for three months last season because of a right oblique strain that proved difficult to overcome. It wasn’t until visiting a chiropractor several weeks into a stalled recovery process that Muncy began to experience relief that proved vital to his return.
“It’s not the same as last year,” Roberts initially said on Wednesday. “Max feels that it’s not muscular, but I think once we get some testing we’ll know more.”
An MRI wound up revealing a Grade 1 strain that Roberts said is not expected to be a season-ending injury and is affecting Muncy’s right side overall rather than being localized to just the oblique.
Dodgers claim Buddy Kennedy
As part of their roster moves on Friday, the Dodgers claimed Kennedy off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Kennedy was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Aug. 12 after appearing in just two games for the team. Kennedy additionally played in four games (one start) for the Philadelphia Phillies this year.
The 26-year-old made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 and also has brief experience with the Detroit Tigers in addition to the Phillies and Blue Jays.
Kennedy has primarily played second base while up in the Majors, but has made starts at third base and first base as well.
