The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Kirby Yates on the 15-day injured list with lower back pain and recalled Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Dodgers additionally added fellow trade-deadline additions Brock Stewart and Alex Call to their active roster as well. They took the places of Dustin May and James Outman, respectively.
Meanwhile, Yates becomes the 12th Dodgers pitcher currently on the injured list. That number will reduce by one when Blake Snell is activated off the 60-day IL for his start on Saturday.
Yates’ IL stint was backdated to July 29, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said some of the trouble has extended to his pelvic area as well.
This is a second time this season Yates has landed on the injured list as he previously missed time with a mild right hamstring strain. The veteran pitcher has been in a rough patch of late, which Roberts attributed to not commanding his splitter.
Yates is 4-3 with three saves, a 4.31 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 39 appearances. Yates is eligible to return on Wednesday, Aug. 13
Paul Gervase replaces xx
Gervase was acquired by the Dodgers as part of a three-team trade with the Rays and Cincinnati Reds on deadline day. The Dodgers traded Hunter Feduccia to the Rays, and received Adam Serinowski and Ben Rortvedt in addition to Gervase.
The right-hander was drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round in 2022, but joined the Rays organization when he was acquired in exchange for Tyler Zuber at the 2024 trade deadline.
Gervase, who stands 6’10, went 2-3 with four saves, a 3.12 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 28 games (one start) for Triple-A Durham this year.
The 25-year-old joined the Rays just over one month ago for his MLB debut and pitched to a 4.56 ERA in five appearances. Gervase struck out five batters over 6.1 innings, but also walked five.
Gervase took Feduccia’s spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, which currently remains full.
