Injuries have been an issue for the Los Angeles Dodgers throughout the season with the likes of Teoscar Hernández, Blake Snell, Tommy Edman, Kiké Hernández, Blake Treinen, Tyler Glasnow, Max Muncy and Roki Sasaki among those to miss time thus far.
Hyeseong Kim has avoided the injured list to this point, but manager Dave Roberts revealed he’s played through a left shoulder issue for the past week. Kim was not in the lineup on Sunday but returned for the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.
Despite the Reds starting a right-hander on Monday night, Edman was not in the lineup. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed after the win that Edman aggravated his right ankle and wasn’t available to play the field, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“It’s day-to-day. Couldn’t play defense tonight. There was an at-bat in the middle game where under normal circumstances, I would’ve hit him for Kim with the bases loaded and one out. But he just couldn’t play defense tonight. Trying to protect him for the short- and longterm. I’m waiting on word from the training staff if he can play tomorrow. We’ll see.”
Roberts also mentioned Kim as a possibility of going on the 10-day injured list:
“Hyeseong is part of that as well. He’s fighting it. He’ll never admit it, but you can just see offensively, with the bat, he’s not himself right now. We’re trying to figure it if we do need to make a move with one of those guys.”
Edman previously aggravated his right ankle this season on a slide into second base, and it prompted spending time on the IL. It was expected to be a minimum stay but his recovery process was delayed and Edman missed two weeks. More recently, Edman has been playing trough a small fracture in his right pinky toe.
Kim went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the Dodgers’ win over the Reds. He hasn’t been able to fully capitalize on an opportunity to play every day, likely due in part to his ailing shoulder.
Alex Freeland would replace Hyeseong Kim or Tommy Edman
If the Dodgers place Kim or Edman on the injured list, Alex Freeland is poised to join the team for his MLB debut.
The top infield prospect in the Dodgers organization has experience at second base, third base and shortstop.
