The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tanner Scott on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday due to left elbow inflammation.
Scott exited Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins after he felt a “sting” during an attempt to complete a four-out save.
There was some initial optimism but also some concern heading into an MRI that was reviewed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. It only revealed inflammation and showed the ligament in Scott’s throwing elbow remained “perfectly intact.”
In the moment, the most alarming aspect for Scott was the uncertainty of what the discomfort in his throwing arm meant given he had never experienced the sensation before.
Initial testing on Scott’s forearm performed after he left the game provided encouraging results, but Tuesday’s MRI was much more definitive and gave him some much needed clarity.
“Yeah. I mean, definitely when it was happening, I had no clue what was going on, because I’ve never had an arm issue in my entire career,” Scott said. “I felt it on the 1-1 pitch, and then it kept getting worse, and I had no clue what it is.
“So after [Tuesday], it kind of gave me a clear head.”
Scott only expects to be shut down from throwing for two or three days, which was surprising news for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
“Very much so, considering where we were at 36 hours ago to now,” Roberts said. “But I think that’s still being mindful and cautious, which I think putting him on the IL, we did the right thing.
“Just still be mindful of when he ramps up again. But yeah, where we’re at, very, very thankful.”
Scott is eligible to be activated on Aug. 6 at the earliest. In his place, Alexis Díaz was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Tanner Scott’s injury increases urgency at trade deadline
The Dodgers have been connected to a number of high-leverage relievers as the MLB trade deadline approaches on July 31. Among their search they have reportedly targeted Félix Bautista, Ryan Helsley, David Bednar and Emmanuel Clase, among others.
With the injury to Scott, Roberts said the Dodgers have increased their efforts to acquire a reliever.
