The Los Angeles Dodgers opened the second half of their season with a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, but it wasn’t by any fault of Tyler Glasnow.
Glasnow turned in a strong start for his second consecutive outing since coming off the 60-day injured list. Facing the Brewers for a second time in a row, Glasnow tossed six innings while allowing just one run on four hits. He only walked one batter and finished with six strikeouts.
But what’s been most important for Glasnow is he’s no longer searching for perfect mechanics in each start. Prior to landing on the IL, Glasnow was often too focused on his mechanics and never felt comfortable.
That led to constantly thinking through the delivery in his mind, and potentially led to right shoulder trouble as he tried to keep tweaking things on the fly and pitching without feeling right.
Glasnow spent a lot of time trying to figure out his mechanics and correct those issues while getting to a point where they were no longer a focus for him.
“I think it’s a fine line, I guess,” Glasnow said. “It’s not turn it off completely, but I think when I’m feeling bad, I resort more to, ‘Alright, how do we fix this?’ As opposed to being, ‘This is what I’ve got today. Let’s just go get it.’
“I think a lot of that was due to the changes. I’m just in a better position right now to go out and be athletic.”
One example of that is when his command fell apart a little in the fifth inning, which led to a walk and run scored. But he was able to bounce back in the sixth inning instead of letting things spiral.
“Some innings are better than others,” Glasnow noted. “I still felt good then, and I was able to go back out in the sixth and everything felt timed up. It was good.”
Glasnow has now allowed just one run in 11 innings since returning from the IL on July 9. Aside from the encouraging results, it’s his health that’s providing the most optimism.
“I think my biggest thing is the recovery and throughout the week,” Glasnow said. “I’ve been feeling really good. I’ve been feeling great.”
Tyler Glasnow providing boost to Dodgers rotation
The Dodgers got Glasnow back at a much-needed time and he has helped bring some stability to their rotation. That is something the Dodgers are both expecting out of him and hoping to get more of as the season goes on.
“It’s been really good. It has,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I just think he’s been able to stay in his rhythm, stay in his delivery, just be in compete mode.
“It’s nice to see the 99s and then the slider is playing, so there’s swing-and-miss there, there’s efficiency to the pitching. All that stuff, it’s been really good.
“And to get him through six, it’s another building block for Tyler. I think he’s in a really good spot. He’s healthy, feeling confident, and we’re better for it, for sure.”
