The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Julian Fernández from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Justin Wrobleski. To make room on the 40-man roster, CJ Alexander was designated for assignment.
In addition, Kiké Hernández was placed on the 15-day injured list while James Outman was recalled.
Fernández signed to a Minor League contract in January, adding some organizational depth at the same time as a few other signings that included Matt Sauer.
Fernández originally signed with the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in July 2012. He was later selected by the San Francisco Giants as the second pick in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft and remained with the organization until joining the Miami Marlins one year later.
Fernández was returned to the Rockies in October 2019 and went on to make his MLB debut in 2021. His first stint in the Majors wasn’t encouraging as he allowed eight runs and 13 baserunners over 6.2 innings.
While with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, the 29-year-old has gone 3-0 with one save, a 4.08 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 24 games (two starts).
Wrobleski pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs against the Astros on Saturday. He has pitched in eight games for the Dodgers this season, posting a 4.50 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 40 innings.
He made his Major League debut in 2024, going 1-2 with a 5.70 ERA in eight games. The southpaw is 12-12 with a 3.56 ERA in 67 minor league games.
The 24-year-old was becoming a key piece of the Dodgers’ bullpen, but this allows him to get some rest and reset over the All-Star break. Ben Casparius has also returned to a bullpen role, giving the Dodgers another multi-inning arm.
Dodgers designate CJ Alexander for assignment
Alexander was claimed off waivers just four days ago on July 3 from the New York Yankees. He began the 2025 season with the Athletics but was designated for assignment as part of a series of roster moves in early June.
That led to the Yankees claiming Alexander off waivers and assigning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. While with the RailRaiders, Alexander batted just .196/.302/.196 with three RBI, seven walks and 16 strikeouts over 13 games.
Alexander was DFA’d for a second time this season when the Yankees selected the contract of Geoff Hartlieb.
He played in just two games for the Oklahoma City Comets, batting .143/.250/.143 in eight plate appearances.
