The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a third consecutive game to the Houston Astros on Sunday, which resulted in being swept at Dodger Stadium for only the second time this season.
The Dodgers were outscored 29-6 in the three-game series, with four of their runs coming on Saturday. L.A.’s offense was also limited to just five extra-base hits over the weekend.
“I think you certainly have to give credit to their staff,” manager Dave Roberts said of the Astros. “The way they pitched us, I thought they did a really nice job. Really just kept us at bay for three games.
“I think as far as the at-bats, I don’t think we really took good at-bats collectively. But again, I think you’ve got to give those guys credit for how they pitched us. So it’s one of those things that, as we said the other night, you’ve got to wash it.
“I think this series, we just got to kind of pick up the pieces where we’re at. Some guys, certainly today that were unavailable, and hope that they can kind of feel better once we get to Milwaukee and kind of see where we’re at.”
The Dodgers’ poor showing against the Astros came on the heels of winning nine of their last 10 games, including a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox.
While the Dodgers entered the series as one of the hottest teams in baseball, Roberts does not believe the Astros caught them at a flat time.
“I don’t think so. I guess when you suppress offense and you don’t hit, I think that sometimes kind of looks like either flat or lethargic, but they just really dominated us on the pitching side,” Roberts said.
“And I thought conversely, offensively, I thought they had a great approach to all of our pitchers one through nine. I thought they really did. So I don’t think it was an emotional thing. I thought we were prepared coming into this series, but we just didn’t play well. We got outplayed.”
Christian Walker torments Dodgers
Christian Walker played a big role in the Astros sweeping the Dodgers as he added two more home runs to his career total at Dodger Stadium. He has now homered 21 times at Chavez Ravine dating back to his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“Yeah,” Roberts answered when asked if he is happy to see Walker leave town. “I guess he’s got the answer key to our pitching. So, yeah, I mean, he always swings the bat well.”
