Recap: Dodgers End Road Trip With Series Win Over Royals

After a rain delay pushed back first pitch by one hour and two minutes, the Los Angeles Dodgers closed out their road trip with a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals to clinch a sixth consecutive series win.

With that, the Dodgers finished 5-1 on the road trip and guaranteed they would end the day at least tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in baseball.

The Dodgers’ win at Kauffman Stadium despite falling into yet another early deficit. The Dodgers allowed their opponent to score first in 21 of 27 games during the month of June.

Even with regularly trailing in games, the Dodgers went 17-10 in June, which is their best stretch in that calendar month since a 17-9 record in 2021. The Dodgers’ 33 comeback wins this season continues to lead the Majors and are nine more than any other team.

Lou Trivino managing to hold the Royals to just one run in his role as opener paid off as Kiké Hernández delivered a go-ahead, two-run home run in the second inning. On top of giving the Dodgers a decided lead, Hernández’s homer was key on a personal level as he looks to emerge from struggling against left-handed pitching this season.

Will Smith provided some insurance with a solo home run in the sixth inning, Max Muncy hit an RBI double in the seventh and Miguel Rojas brought him home on a single.

Justin Wrobleski continued to excel in his role as a bulk pitcher out of the bullpen as he held the Royals scoreless over six innings. That tied a career high for Wrobleski, which he first reached on June 6, but that was in a traditional start and saw him allow four runs in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Dodgers, Royals honor Negro Leagues

Sunday marked the Royals’ annual Salute to the Negro Leagues Game, which in other years has been scheduled during their series with the Dodgers as well. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s only season with the Monarchs.

The Royals wore black and gold Kansas City Monarchs cap from 1945, and the Dodgers participated with their Brooklyn hat.

All players and both managers are going to sign their individual hat so they can be auctioned with proceeds benefitting the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City.
