The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Matt Beaty from Triple-A Oklahoma City and selected the contract of Kyle Garlick prior to Friday’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Kenta Maeda was placed on the 10-day injured list in the final corresponding move that was necessary.
The Dodgers previously optioned JT Chargois and Rocky Gale to Oklahoma City on Thursday, but only activated Caleb Ferguson off the injured list and were temporarily left with an open spot on the 25-man active roster.
This marks Beaty’s second time joining the Dodgers this season. He was recalled at the end of April to take the place of A.J. Pollock days ahead of elbow surgery that’s expected to sideline the veteran outfielder at least into July.
Beaty went 2-for-3 with two RBI while appearing in three games before returning to Oklahoma City. Beaty collected his first hit the same night of his MLB debut.
Now Garlick finds himself in the position Beaty was, as it’s his first time being added to a Major League roster. The Cal Poly Pomona product was selected by the Dodgers in the 28th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
Garlick had an impressive showing with Double-A Tulsa to start last season, which earned him a promotion to Oklahoma City. There was some regression but the Dodgers saw enough to include Garlick among their non-roster invitees to Spring Training this year.
It was a fourth year Garlick appeared in Cactus League games for the Dodgers, but by far marked his most extensive opportunity. He hit .267/.389/.533 with two doubles, one triple and two RBI over 10 games this past spring.
Garlick began the season with a second stint in Oklahoma City, batting .280/.375/.627 with nine doubles, one triple, 10 home runs and 20 RBI through 35 games. The 27-year-old has primarily played left field and right field throughout his Minor League career.
The action is pretty evenly split, with 172 games coming in left and 176 in right. The addition of Garlick gives the Dodgers 38 players on their 40-man roster.
