The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Emmet Sheehan from the 60-day injured list and optioned Matt Sauer to Triple-A Oklahoma City. With Sheehan being reinstated, the Dodgers now have a full 40-man roster.
Sauer was last recalled on June 10 for his fourth stint with the club. He first made the roster for the Tokyo Series and then had three other stints as the bulk pitcher for the Dodgers.
Across 27.2 innings, Sauer has pitched to a 6.18 ERA, 4.91 FIP and 1.45 WHIP with an 18.3% strikeout rate and 6.7% walk rate. His ERA was inflated by his outing against the Padres on June 10, when he allowed nine earned runs over 4.2 innings as the Dodgers effectively punted the game.
Sauer also pitched Tuesday night against the Padres, earning the win while tossing 2.1 innings and allowing three runs.
This is the fourth time Sauer has been optioned, so if the Dodgers call him up again, he can only return to the Minor Leagues one more time before he would need to clear waivers.
Emmet Sheehan returns to Dodgers
Sheehan is set to make his 2025 season debut and first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2024.
The right-hander started his rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers on May 26 and followed that by pitching three times for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Sheehan pitched to a combined 3.97 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in the four outings. He had allowed one run or fewer in each rehab start before giving up four last week to the Albuquerque Isotopes in a notoriously hitter-friendly ballpark.
“I think the stuff was better than the line score,” Roberts said last week.
Given his brief rehab assignment, the Dodgers don’t anticipate Sheehan to go deep into his start, expecting just around four innings and roughly 60 pitches.
As a rookie in 2023, Sheehan pitched to a 4.92 ERA, 4.85 FIP and 1.19 WHIP following his promotion from Double-A, but he showed intriguing stuff and struck out 25.8% of hitters faced and walked 10.5%.
