Tyler Glasnow has been limited to just five starts this season after landing on the 15-day injured list on April 28 with right shoulder inflammation.
He was later transferred to the 60-day IL to make space on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
Glasnow threw his first bullpen session since the injury on May 24, and his progression has continued since then. On Friday, Glasnow faced hitters for the first time in a one-inning simulated game, and things went well, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
“It was really good,” Roberts said. “I got to see it with my own eyes. The velocity was there, the swing and miss, the delivery. Talking to him after, he was really excited.
“And so there’ll be another simulated game, two innings next week. I’m not sure exactly which day, but we’re very encouraged. I thought the stuff was really good, and Tyler was pretty excited.”
Glasnow has not pitched in a game in roughly seven weeks, so he’s going through a full build-up process similar to Spring Training. That means it’s still going to be a while before the right-hander is able to return, despite the Dodgers being encouraged by his progress after a recent setback.
“I would say the goal would be to make sure we at least get into five (innings) and 75 (pitches),” Roberts said. “So I think that now, if you look at going today and then next week, do a two-inning situation, then you kind of continue to go from there.
“But today was very promising.”
Tyler Glasnow’s mechanical adjustments
Glasnow spent the offseason working on his mechanics, and those changes are potentially the reason for his shoulder discomfort. While the 31-year-old has been on the IL, he’s made sure to get his mechanics figured out.
“A lot of this is kind of trusting my natural throw and just making sure all the staples of a healthy delivery are there,” Glasnow recently said. “I think they tend to get out of whack, or I’m not stable, I put myself at risk.
“So I think just working with them to try to maybe not make such drastic changes, but just get out to where we kind of talked about, just be athletic to pitch.
“I think it was kind of tough making such drastic changes to where it was a change for health, but then at the same time, performance goes down because it’s such a foreign feeling. Trying to kind of meld the best of both world situation.
“But right now, I feel really good mechanics wise, it’s just like be athletic and throw, and I’ve been able to be myself more now. As I get on the mound and keep going, I’ll kind of know more.”
