Dodgers Rumors: Interest In Left-Handed Hitter For Bench

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a successful start to their 2025 season despite the roster once again being decimated by injuries.

The club currently has 15 pitchers on the injured list, including multiple key pitchers in Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen. Despite the injuries to their pitching staff, the Dodgers’ position player group has remained mostly healthy.

But even with their good health and a full roster of position players at the moment, the Dodgers appear to be searching for a left-handed bench bat, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today:

The Dodgers are scouring the market these days for a left-handed hitting bat off the bench.

The Dodgers have previously been connected to Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon, a left-handed hitter who has struggled this year to the tune of a .211/.328/.361 line and 83 wRC+.

It’s too early to predict which players will be available at the trade deadline, but those from the bottom-dwelling teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Rockies should factor into the equation.

Even if the Dodgers hope to add a bench bat, their focus at the moment is almost certainly on the pitching staff, and they should once again be active searching for arms. They’ve already made a trade for Alexis Díaz, and it would not be surprising to see a few more moves before this season’s MLB trade deadline on July 31.

How would a left-handed bat fit on Dodgers roster?

On the surface, the Dodgers’ seemingly searching for a left-handed bench bat does not make a ton of sense. The team currently has Dalton Rushing and Hyeseong Kim on their bench, and both of them are unlikely to be replaced.

Kiké Hernández and Miguel Rojas fill round out the group of reserves. And while Rojas could conceivably be moved, that may be unlikely to happen given his value in the clubhouse and versatility. The Dodgers already had to make the difficult decisions to move on from Austin Barnes and Chris Taylor due to their roster crunch.

They could be looking for someone with Minor League options to report to Triple-A Oklahoma City and provide depth, which would make some more sense.

Their current position player depth on the 40-man roster consists of Hunter Feduccia, Chuckie Robinson, Steward Berroa, James Outman and Estury Ruiz. It’s not exactly an inspiring group of options, and they could use an infielder.
