Recap: Poor Defense & Lack Of Offense Cost Dodgers Series Loss To Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets played the rubber match of their three-game series, but it was the team from the Big Apple that came away with a series win after a 3-1 victory.

The game proved to be a bit of a pitcher’s duel between Landon Knack and Kodai Senga, but it didn’t look that way from the start as both teams scored in the first inning.

Shohei Ohtani opened the game with a leadoff home run, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead and starting what looked like a short night for Senga. After Mookie Betts reached on a double, Freddie Freeman doubled to put two runners in scoring position.

But the Dodgers failed to take advantage of their chance as Betts was thrown out trying to score of a fly out from Will Smith and Teoscar Hernández struck out to end the inning.

Knack started his night with two strikeouts and appeared to have a 1-2-3 inning, but an error from Max Muncy allowed Juan Soto to reach base and extended the inning. The Mets took advantage as Pete Alonso then launched a two-run homer to put the Mets up 2-1.

The Mets added their third run as the result of another error. After a leadoff single in the third inning from Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos followed with an infield single before a throwing error from Betts allowed both runners to get into scoring position. Lindor ended up scoring on a force out from Soto.

That was the second of four errors the Dodgers committed while Knack was on the mound, with the other coming in the fifth inning when Will Smith dropped a pop up and the other in the eighth on a throwing error from Smith, but those did not come back to hurt them.

Despite having little help from his team, Knack looked strong as he pitched six innings, allowing three runs and just one of them earned on four hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Dodgers offense struggles against Mets

The Dodgers offense did not score again after the leadoff home run in the first inning, and they didn’t have many opportunities, either. They looked close to putting together a rally in the fourth and fifth innings, but failed to take advantage both times.

Freeman singled to start the inning, but Smith followed by hitting into a double play. Teoscar Hernández then doubled and Muncy worked a walk, but Andy Pages flied out to end the inning.

In the fifth, Michael Conforto had a leadoff walk, Betts hit a two-out single and Freeman walked to load the bases, but Smith grounded out to end the inning.

The team finished the game going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, leaving seven men on base.
