Dodgers Roster: Matt Sauer Optioned, Bobby Miller Recalled

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Bobby Miller and optioned Matt Sauer to Triple-A Oklahoma City before Saturday’s game against the New York Mets.

The move comes amid the Dodgers need for pitching after a 13-inning game on Friday, which was also part of a nearly two-hour rain delay that forced Clayton Kershaw to throw just two innings.

The Dodgers were able to get three innings each from Matt Sauer and Ben Casparius, but after Tannter Scott blew a save that sent the game to extras, they used seven of the eight relievers on their roster. Only Jack Dreyer did not pitch in the game.

Miller was previously up with the Dodgers in the middle of April for a spot start. He was given a 7-1 lead after the first inning, but he was unable to provide length and the outing became a disaster.

The right-hander gave up a grand slam as part of a five-run third inning that erased the Dodgers’ comfortable lead and he managed to complete just three innings. Miller did strike out seven hitters, but that did not make up for failing to keep runs of the board and not going deep into the game.

At the Triple-A level, Miller posted a 4.63 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 35 innings while striking out 31 batters and walking 29. He owns a career 5.45 ERA across 183.1 innings at the MLB level.

Dodgers option Matt Sauer

Sauer is headed back to Triple-A one day after he pitched three innings. Sauer was the first pitcher the Dodgers turned to once play resumed after a rain delay of one hour and 38 minutes.

He and Casparius took a burden off the Dodgers bullpen by logging three innings each, but that was essentially wiped away when Tanner Scott blew his fourth save of the season.

That ultimately led to the Dodgers using seven of their eight relief pitchers in the game.

Sauer has been impressive during his stints up with the team, going 1-0 with a 3.05 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in seven games (one start).
