The Chicago White Sox claimed Yoendrys Gómez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and released Greg Jones in order to make room on their 40-man roster.
Gómez is now part of his third organization this season after previously spending his entire career with the New York Yankees. He signed with the Yankees as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela in 2016.
Gómez became a top-30 prospect in the Yankees farm system and was added onto their 40-man roster in November 2020 in order to be protected from possibly getting selected in the annual Rule 5 Draft.
The 25-year-old made his MLB debut in 2023 and also had three separate stints with the Yankees last season. Over parts of three years Yankees, Gómez went 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA, 5.47 FIP and 1.41 WHIP in 12 games.
He was designated for assignment by the Yankees last month and claimed off waivers by the Dodgers on April 25. The Dodgers then added Gómez to their active roster the following day.
In his six appearances this season before the Yankees’ DFA decision, Gómez was 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and five strikeouts over 10 innings pitched.
Why did Dodgers DFA Yoendry Gómez?
Gómez was with the Dodgers until May 6, when he was removed from their roster in order for the team to recall J.P. Feyereisen.
The right-hander had a short stint with the Dodgers that in part seemingly was tied to struggling in two of three appearances. In 4.1 innings pitched, Gómez had a 14.54 ERA and 7.68 FIP.
Since he was activated, no other Dodgers relief pitcher allowed more than his seven runs. Gómez was tied with Dustin May, though he pitched 6.2 more innings in his starter role.
Gómez made his final appearance for the Dodgers this past Monday when he entered a 7-1 game in the eighth inning. He exited after giving up a three-run homer and only recording one out.
It was the second time Gómez turned a significant late lead into a close game for the Dodgers. He previously allowed four runs in one inning to the Miami Marlins on April 30 in a 12-7 victory.
