The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Tony Gonsolin from the 15-day injured list and optioned Matt Sauer to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to first pitch of their series finale against the Miami Marlins.
Sauer is headed back to OKC one day after being added onto the Dodgers’ active roster. Noah Davis, who was recalled on Monday, was optioned so that Sauer could join the team for their planned bullpen game.
Sauer threw five innings on Tuesday night in what was his second appearance for the Dodgers this season. The 26-year-old previously allowed one run over 1.2 innings against the Washington Nationals on April 7.
During his time with the OKC Comets thus far, Sauer is 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and one save in four games (three starts).
The Dodgers signed Sauer to a Minor League contract during the offseason. He received a non-roster invite to Spring Training and was included on their travel roster for the Tokyo Series. Sauer then was called up before the finale against the Chicago Cubs.
Sauer made his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals last season, appearing in 14 games.
Tony Gonsolin gives boost to Dodgers rotation
Gonsolin unexpectedly began the season on the injured list because of tweaking his back while lifting weights late in Spring Training. Prior to that, he arguably had the inside track to be part of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation.
Gonsolin’s arrival nevertheless comes at an opportune time as the Dodgers lost Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow to the injured list this month.
While on a rehab assignment with Oklahoma City, the right-hander went 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across four starts. He struck out 16 batters and issued six walks over 14 innings pitched.
Wednesday’s game is Gonsolin’s first at the Major League level since Aug. 18, 2023.
He underwent Tommy John surgery on Sept. 1, 2023, and made a late push to return at the end of last season before the Dodgers decided to shift Gonsolin’s focus and return to 2025.
