The Los Angeles Dodgers played another back-and-forth affair at Wrigley Field, and for the second consecutive game the night ended in disappointment as they lost 7-6 to the Chicago Cubs.
As a result the Dodgers went 2-3 on their road trip and lost the season series to the Cubs. After sweeping Chicago in the Tokyo Series, L.A. lost four of their next five head-to-head meetings.
Singles by Austin Barnes and Shohei Ohtani put two on in the third inning, and they were driven in by Teoscar Hernández’s two-out base hit that gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
But after Ben Casparius started their bullpen game with 2.1 scoreless innings and Anthony Banda got through the third and retired Michael Busch to start the fourth, Noah Davis was unable to keep the Cubs off the board. Davis, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 18, threw one pitch that resulted in the game-winning single of the Dodgers’ walk-off loss on Tuesday.
Davis wasn’t in quite of a pressure situation one night later, but he immediately fell into trouble. A one-out single was followed by a walk, and Pete Crow-Armstrong then put the Cubs ahead with a three-run homer.
The home run was Crow-Armstrong’s second in as many games. It also increased his season total to five, of which four have been hit against the Dodgers.
The fifth inning began with plenty of promise for the Dodgers, but Matthew Boyd helped his cause after allowing back-to-back singles by picking off Barnes at first base. It cost the Dodgers a run but they avoided a complete disaster thanks to Mookie Betts’ RBI double with two outs.
Hernández followed that with a two-run home run that Dodgers ahead 5-3.
Subar relief pitching continued to be a theme for the Dodgers, with standout rookie Jack Dreyer taking his lumps for the first time this season.
Dreyer walked the bases loaded with one out, then gave up a two-run single to Dansby Swanson, a sacrifice fly, and Crow-Armstrong’s RBI base hit extended the Cubs’ lead to 7-5.
Andy Pages hit a solo home run in the sixth inning but the Dodgers never drew any closer.
Next for Dodgers
Thursday is an off day on the Dodgers’ schedule and they will then begin a weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with ace Paul Skenes starting the opener. The homestand concludes with three games against the Miami Marlins.
