Dodgers Spring Training Roster Cuts: Alex Freeland Among Players Sent To Minor League Camp

The Los Angeles Dodgers made their second round of Spring Training roster cuts following their 8-4 Cactus League victory over the Texas Rangers.

Griffin Lockwood-Powell, Chris Okey, Alex Freeland, Austin Gauthier and Kody Hoese were all reassigned to Minor League camp.

The Dodgers now have 52 players remaining in big league camp. It is expected that 31 of the players still in camp will make the trip to Japan for the Tokyo Series, and their roster will need to be trimmed down to 26 for Opening Day against the Chicago Cubs on March 18.

Among the most recent roster cuts, Freeland is the most notable, as he appears on numerous Top 100 prospect lists. In Spring Training, the 23-year-old hit .300 in 10 at-bats with one home run.

Gauthier is another player who could make his MLB debut this season. The utilityman struggled in Spring Training, hitting just .071 in 14 at-bats, but he projects to be a solid backup infielder.

Hoese was the Dodgers’ first round pick, 25th overall, in the 2019 Draft, but he’s struggled to find consistency in the Minors. He hit .250 with a .668 on-base plus slugging percentage in 20 at-bats.

Lockwood-Powell is a catcher by trade but saw significant time at first base in Spring Training while Freddie Freeman was out. The 27-year-old hit .235 with two RBI in 17 at-bats.

Okey is an organizational depth catcher that should spend the entire season in Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 30-year-old hit .333 with one home run, three RBIs and a 1.096 OPS in 12 at-bats in his Cactus League appearances.

Dodgers first round of roster cuts

The Dodgers previously optioned Nick Frasso while Carlos Duran, Julian Fernández, Justin Jarvis, Ryan Ward, Justin Dean, Zyhir Hope and Josue De Paula were reassigned.

Players on the 40-man roster are required to be optioned while those in camp as non-roster invitees can be sent back to the Minor League level.
