Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Blow 9th Inning Lead Against Royals

The Los Angeles Dodgers took a lead into the ninth inning against the Kansas City Royals, but came out of the game still searching for their first win of Cactus League play. The Dodgers are now 0-3 to begin their Spring Training schedule after the 11-10 loss.

Nick Frasso, one of the Dodgers’ highly regarded pitching prospects, got the start on the mound. It was his first outing since he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder late in 2023 that forced him to miss all of last season.

Frasso pitched a scoreless first inning, striking out MJ Melendez. Freddy Fermin reached on an error by Hyeseong Kim, but with two outs, Frasso worked around it by getting Nick Pratto to fly out.

The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when their rally was started off by Teoscar Hernández, who roped a one-out double. They went on to load the bases before Hunter Feduccia delivered with a two-out two-run single, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Edgardo Henriquez also made his first Cactus League appearance, but turned in a rough outing. He recorded just one out while walking three, giving up one hit and allowing four runs. Livan Reinoso relieved Henriquez to get out of the inning, but also allowed a run to score that gave the Royals a 5-2 lead.

That lead didn’t last long as the Dodgers rallied, beginning with Dalton Rushing getting hit by a pitch and James Outman drawing a walk. Max Muncy then slugged his first home run of the Spring to tie the game, 5-5.

The Dodgers came back to take the lead when David Bote slapped an RBI single and Feduccia blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning, making it a 9-5 game. Feduccia went 3-for-3 in the game with five RBI.

The Royals answered back with three runs in the sixth against Jack Little, but top prospect Zyhir Hope extended the lead with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Kansas City added another run in the eighth before rallying in the ninth with two runs to take the lead.

What’s next for Dodgers Spring Training?

The Dodgers are back at home again at Camelback Ranch tomorrow, Feb. 23, as they face the San Diego Padres for the first time since the 2024 National League Division Series. The Dodgers are giving the start to Dustin May while the Padres give the ball to Braden Nett.

It’s May’s first scheduled start since undergoing right flexor tendon surgery and a revision of his 2021 Tommy John procedure. He was expected to return last season, but due to a salad accident, he underwent emergency esophageal surgery.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PT and 1:05 p.m. local time.
