The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to become the first team in more than two decades to repeat as World Series champions and have helped their cause by adding several high-profile players this offseason.
The team most notably signed Blake Snell to a five-year, $182 million contract, giving them another ace at the top of the rotation.
The Dodgers also re-signed Teoscar Hernández and Blake Treinen, while adding the likes of Tanner Scott, Michael Conforto, Hyeseong Kim and Roki Sasaki.
Their spending spree has drawn the ire of opposing fans and team owners, who believe it is becoming increasingly difficult to compete with the Dodgers.
“I don’t look at us as villains,” Snell began. “I look at us as a team that wants to win. If any other teams or fanbases want to get upset, you know what to do. Follow what the Dodgers are doing. They want to win, they’re spending money.
“That’s how you have to do it.”
To reiterate Snell’s point, the Dodgers should not be scolded for going all out to win the World Series every year. If anything, it should serve as inspiration for other teams to make more of an effort to do the same.
The Dodgers do have a financial advantage, but they also draft well and routinely find hidden gems via smaller trades and in free agency. The club has also created a positive culture that others want to be part of, which is a testament to manager Dave Roberts and the rest of the coaching staff.
Dodgers causing owners to consider MLB salary cap
A recent report suggested that some team owners are growing in favor of an MLB salary cap following the Dodgers’ and New York Mets’ respective spending sprees this offseason.
MLB is the only major North American professional sports league without a salary cap or floor.
Any proposal of a salary cap by team owners would almost certainly be met with resistance from the MLB Players Association (MLBPA). That could set the stage for another lockout when the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1, 2026.
