Los Angeles Dodgers franchise history has included several talented infielders spanning across multiple decades, with the most recent group including the likes of Corey Seager, Justin Turner, Freddie Freeman, Trea Turner and Mookie Betts, among others.
Hyeseong Kim is looking to make an impact with the Dodgers after signing a three-year, $12.5 million contract. Kim’s deal includes options for the 2028 and 2029 seasons that must be exercised or declined together. Should the Dodgers keep Kim under contract through 2029, the total value of his contract would reach $22 million.
In making the jump from the KBO to Major League Baseball, Kim needed to find a new jersey number with the Dodgers because his No. 3 worn in South Korea is occupied by Chris Taylor.
According to Jee-ho Yoo of Yonhap News Agency, Kim chose to wear No. 6 with the Dodgers in part because of his affinity for Trea Turner:
Kim, who wore No. 3 in the KBO, will don No. 6, with Taylor having his South Korean number. Former Dodgers star Trea Turner wore No. 6, and Kim said Turner is one of his favorite players.
“Hopefully, I can also play well wearing the same number as Trea Turner,” Kim said.
Turner wore No. 6 with the Dodgers over the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He joined the team along with Max Scherzer in a blockbuster trade the Dodgers completed with the Washington Nationals at the deadline in 2021.
Scherzer became a free agent that offseason and Turner’s time on the open market arrived the following year. Scherzer went on to sign with the New York Mets, while Turner joined the Philadelphia Phillies.
After Turner left in free agency, David Peralta (2023), Cavan Biggio (2024) and Taylor Trammell (2024) also wore No. 6 for the Dodgers. Carl Furillo (1946-1960) and Steve Garvey (1969-1982) are other Dodgers who notably wore No. 6 with the team.
Trea Turner’s Dodgers stats
Over parts of two seasons with the Dodgers, Turner played second base before returning to shortstop, and batted .307/.353/.490 with 56 doubles, 31 home runs, 128 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 212 games.
Among other accolades during a brief Dodgers career, Turner was selected to the 2022 All-Star Game.
