Tommy Edman Feels ‘Blessed’ With Having Played For Cardinals & Dodgers

Multiple years of interest culminated with the Los Angeles Dodgers swinging a key three-team trade that included acquiring Tommy Edman at the 2024 deadline.

Edman was on the injured list at the time and had yet to play in a single game that year, but he went on to fill a need for the Dodgers and put together an impressive postseason performance. It included earning National League Championship Series MVP honors as the Dodgers eliminated the New York Mets.

In 16 postseason games, Edman batted .328/.354/.508 with two home runs, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored. His defensive prowess at multiple positions also was noticeable in several key moments.

Now a Dodgers World Series champion and having also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Edman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity of having been part of two illustrious franchises, via MLB Network Radio:

“There’s definitely a lot of similarities, just with the success the organizations have had and the fact that the legends still enjoy coming around. With St. Louis, you had all the guys like, Ozzie (Smith), Willie McGee. And with the Dodgers this past year, I got to meet Sandy Koufax — I think it was in New York. And obviously with what happened with Fernando (Valenzuela), you saw everybody bond around that.

“There’s certainly a lot of similarities, just with the history and doing things the right way. I feel like I’ve been very blessed to be a part of two great organizations.”

Edman remained under team control through the 2025 season but the Dodgers still took it upon themselves to sign him to a five-year, $72 million contract extension that supersedes the final year of his previous deal. Edman’s new contract with the Dodgers includes a $13 million team option for the 2030 season as well.

Edman’s time with the Cardinals spanned over 596 regular season games from 2019-2023, where he compiled a 15.2 fWAR in that stretch.

Tommy Edman: Dodgers want to be World Series dynasty

Edman previously highlighted the organization’s desire to make this the most dominant stretch of baseball in Dodgers franchise history.

Referencing the New York Yankees of the late 1990s, Edman said the Dodgers’ goal is to push for back-to-back World Series titles.

A dynasty is what the Dodgers are after, and the front office is backing up their focus by putting the best product on the field. Edman is a piece to that puzzle, and his play in the NLCS further validated their longstanding interest.
