The Rule 5 Draft was held Wednesday during the annual MLB Winter Meetings, which saw a total of 83 selected across the Major League and Minor League phases.
For the Los Angeles Dodgers, it amounted to losing five prospects during the Rule 5 Draft and also making one selection. The Dodgers had one player taken during the Major League portion and four in the Minor League phases.
Teams had until 3 p.m. PT on Nov. 19 to add players to their 40-man rosters to prevent them from being eligible in this year’s Rule 5 Draft. Players signed at 18 years old or younger become Rule 5 eligible after five seasons, while those signed at age 19 or older are eligible within four seasons.
The Dodgers only protected Jack Dreyer, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2021.
A team needed to have room on their 40-man roster in order to make a pick during the Rule 5 Draft. Clubs pay $100,000 to select a player in the Major League phase, but if that player doesn’t stay on their active roster for the full ensuing season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.
Costs range from $12,000 to $24,000 to make selections during the Minor League phases of the Rule 5 Draft. Players selected during this portion are not subject to the aforementioned roster rule with their new organization.

Meanwhile, Dodgers prospect Garrett McDaniels was taken by the Los Angeles Angels with the third overall pick in the first round of the Major League portion. McDaniels’ highest level reached with the Dodgers organization was Double-A Tulsa this year.
