Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes recently acknowledged starting pitching was a focus for the team this offseason, and that was addressed this week with the reported signing of Blake Snell to a five-year contract.
However, indications have been the Dodgers were looking to add multiple starters to their rotation that has some question marks for 2025 due to multiple pitchers returning from respective injuries.
Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler, Jack Flaherty and Max Fried remain among notable free agents. But another possibility for the Dodgers would be a Garrett Crochet trade with the Chicago White Sox.
Jon Heyman relayed on a live stream that trading for Crochet is an option the Dodgers remain interested in even after signing Snell, per MLB.com
Finally, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman said during his Wednesday chat on Bleacher Report that the Dodgers are also in on Crochet, alongside Baltimore and Boston.
The Dodgers were among several teams that discussed a Crochet trade at the 2024 deadline before the White Sox ultimately elected to keep the left-hander. Their decision stemmed from Crochet remaining under team control for multiple seasons and was due in part to an innings limit complicating matters.
It was reported at the time Crochet wanted a contract extension in order to continue pitching in the postseason.
Flaherty wound up being the best starting pitcher traded at the deadline, and he was a key member in helping the Dodgers reach and win the World Series.
There has not been much indication the Dodgers have serious interest in re-signing Flaherty, who could wind up with the New York Yankees or potentially San Diego Padres. Buehler and the Yankees are also said to have mutual interest.
While the Dodgers signing Snell doesn’t appear to have taken them out of the Crochet sweepstakes, there’s some though it’s reduced the likelihood of re-signing Buehler.
Garrett Crochet trade interest
Along with the Dodgers, the likes of the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Yankees and Boston Red Sox are among the teams that have been mentioned with a potential Crochet trade.
The White Sox reportedly are seeking a return of young position players in exchange for the 25-year-old. Crochet is under team control via arbitration through the 2026 season.
