Finalists for the 2024 Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) Awards were unveiled, which includes the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year honors for Major League Baseball’s top talents.
The winners will be announced over four days next week, beginning with the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards on Monday, Nov. 18.
Manager of the Year follows on Nov. 19, Cy Young winners are announced on Nov. 20, and it concludes on Thursday, Nov. 21 with the MVP Awards.
All BBWAA Award winners will be announced live on MLB Network with special shows starting at 3 p.m. PT for each designated day.
The voting process to determine the winners and finalists for each category is run by the BBWAA. The BBWAA created these awards and it is not determined by MLB.
Voters submit their ballots before the start of the postseason.
For MVP, there are 10 spots on the ballot. For Cy Young, there are five. For Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year, there are three. A writer may not split a spot on the ballot between two candidates.
For all awards, there is a point system that is weighted by the spot on the ballot.
For the MVP, a first-place vote is worth 14 points. From second to 10th, the ballot spots are worth 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 points, respectively. For the Cy Young, the points are 7-4-3-2-1. For the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year, the points are 5-3-1.
Two writers from each MLB city are recommended by the local chapter chairman and approved by the national secretary-treasurer to vote for each award.
Writers from National League cities vote for that league’s awards, and writers from American League cities vote for theirs, making 30 voters for each award. Most traveling beat writers will vote for at least one annual award each year.
In some chapters, columnists or backup writers may also vote. Any active member of the BBWAA is eligible to vote for annual awards, regardless of his or her number of years in the organization. Some honorary members may also vote.
The Los Angeles Dodgers only had one finalist for an award as Shohei Ohtani finished in the top-three of National League MVP voting. He is the presumed favorite to win, and could take home the award unanimously.
